How do heat pumps work?

  • Air source heat pumps use a compressor to transfer heat from the outside air to water.
  • This heated water is then used to warm your rooms via radiators or underfloor heating.
  • The hot water can also be stored in a cylinder for use in taps, showers, and baths.
  • The unit is installed outside your property and resembles an air conditioning unit.
  • Air source heat pumps can operate even in sub-zero temperatures, as low as –25C, making them a reliable and effective heating solution.
  • Heat pumps can also be used to cool your property, by reversing the process to extract heat from the indoor air and transferring it to the outside.
  • Air source heat pumps work best when the property is well insulated.
  • When used in combination with solar panels, heat pumps can create highly efficient heating and cooling systems. The solar panels can either be used to directly power the heat pump or can be used to charge a battery bank that powers the heat pump.

Financial benefits

  • In addition to lowering your businesses energy bills, businesses that install heat pumps may be eligible for financial incentives. This can result in significant savings and can offset the initial cost of installation. We’re happy to advise you on the current available schemes.
  • Other financial benefits can include increased property value, reduced carbon emissions and improved public perception of your business.

At Raven Renewables, we can advise on the grants and funding available in the UK, and we’ll support you throughout the application process.

Is planning permission needed?

In most cases, businesses don’t need planning permission to install air source heat pumps, as they’re considered permitted developments. However, there may be some exceptions, such as if your building is listed, located in a conservation area or national park, or if your installation requires major structural changes. It’s always best to check with your local planning authority for guidance.

We recommend regular servicing and maintenance of your heat pump to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. At Raven Renewables, we offer comprehensive service and maintenance plans for all our installed heat pump systems.
